Confessions of a Closet Cover Slut

Author Jenna Ives recent post about great book covers got me to thinking. What makes a great cover for me?

I've been thinking alot about bookcovers lately, probably because I'm close to the point of having a new one of my own. Covers are important to me as an author, probably because they're so important to me as a reader. I confess. I'm a book cover slut. You can throw me blurbs, excerpts, tag lines and teasers 'til the cows come home, but unless I already know an author and their work, I probably won't buy if I don't like the cover.

But show me a great cover, and you can just flip me over and slather me with steak sauce, because I'm done. Lately, I've noticed that I'm a bit saturated on the whole naked male torso as cover. Well, with a few notable exceptions like this one:

But the reason the man boob cover above worked for me was because the cover also transported me to another time and place--one I very much wanted to visit. Even if the author of the book hadn't been one of my friends and fellow bloggers, it would have prompted me to buy the book, or at the very least, pick it up and explore it. And once a book is in hand....doesn't very often happen that I then part with it.

Same with the cover image from one of my favorite Jenna McCormick books...it tells me everything I need to know about the book at a glance.

So what about you as a reader? Are you also saturated with naked man boob? What kinds of covers prompt you to pick up a book and start exploring?

Awe, you flatter me. Yeah, I'm a cover ho-bag, bought several that I wish I hadn't due to the covers. The whole don't judge a book by it's cover truly works both ways.

I'm not really a fan of the simple images that seem to be taking over erotica covers. The button, the feather, the keyring, the drop of water, a ribbon, ect. I want a cover to set the mood for the read.

Yup, I'm a sucker for a good cover as well. As for man boobs...well, if done right, they draw me in - like Saranna's. And yes, I am guilty of the same thing as Jenna - saw an awesome cover, got the book, and then said "I will never get back the time I wasted reading this."
