I'm surrounded by printed manuscripts and entry forms, in the throes of coordinating the RWNZ Clendon Award at the moment. It's a full manuscript contest -- no partials here, baby! So my office looks like a bomb site. Or perhaps, an editor's desk, LOL.
Anyway, direly short on time tonight. It's nearly 5pm, I still need to get changed, grab a snack and hopefully make it to karate class on time. Then rush home, grab a shower, get changed, and head off to Ceroc class. Thursday evenings are busy, what can I say?
So, desperate for inspiration at this late hour, I'm resorting to book recommendations.
Have read a number of really wonderful novels this month:
Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
"In Ethan Wate's hometown there lies the darkest of secrets..."A lush Southern gothic" which is also a YA of the paranormal persuasion. Ate this one up, despite its 500+ pages and all the other stuff I had to get through.
There is a girl. Slowly, she pulled the hood from her head... green eyes, black hair. Lena Duchannes.
There is a curse. On the sixteenth moon, of the sixteenth year, The Book will take what it's been promised. And no one can stop it.
In the end, there is a grave.
Lena and Ethan become bound together by a deep, powerful love. But Lena is cursed and, on her sixteenth birthday, her fate will be decided. Ethan never even saw it coming."
Soulless by Gail Carriger
"Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia is responsible. Can seh figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?"
Loved this book! So did my paranormal YA loving daughter. With its hints of steam-punk, and its very different take on vampires, it was a perfect way to expand her horizons into the historical genre. Utterly charming!
Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh
"Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed -- an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn -- but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel Raphael, is used to being in control -- especially when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority...Totally awesome. Frankly, I just can't get enough of Nalini's angels. They're incredible! I cried when I read Angels' Blood, the first in the series. (And even though I knew what was coming, I cried the second time I read it, too!). Didn't cry over this one.... but only because I was too busy gasping for breath! If you haven't read Angels' Blood yet, then get thee to a bookstore immediately.... and buy them both.
They've barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing -- and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena..."
Your turn: what good books have you read this month?
Cheers,
Maree

I've read:
Kresley Cole's Pleasure of a Dark Prince. YUM. Can't go wrong with Valkyries and Scottish Werewolves. Of course, I don't think you can ever go wrong with Kresley. I love her voice.
Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman. Interesting read, that. Enthralling, actually.
Unmasked: An Erotic Retelling of the Phantom of the Opera by Colette Gale. I have some issues with one word this author uses during her sex scenes, but otherwise, the writing and the rich history in all of her books is lovely.
Hot Blood X: an anhtology of erotic horror. Always a good time.
The Torturers Apprentice: another anthology of speculative and horror fictions. This was also a good read.
In Bleed Country by Brian Fatah Steele. Best thing I've read in a long time. I loved this book. Horror again.
I've read a few WIPs and stuff that's "pre-published" by friends.
I know I'm missing some. It's been a fun month though.
Gee. I wonder why my horror novel won't leave me alone. Duh. I was sitting here looking at the file, debating working on it and I couldn't figure out why after so long, it decided to talk again. Um, could be since I've been reading in the genre? Geez.
Oh, and I read Faery Magick an antho of faery romance.
Horrors, Saranna? How do you sleep at night? LOL. If you're anything like me, I guess you don't... because you're thinking up plots and characters and all the deliciously nasty crap you're gonna put them through!
And geez, tease much? Now I'm gonna have to go buy Umasked because I sooo want to find out what "that" word is ;-)
Hi, Maree! I love recommending books - you never know what might inspire someone else to try one you shared!
Over the last few weeks I've read Erica Hayes - SHADOWFAE.
Blurb: Enslaved by a demon lord, Jade is forced to spend her nights seducing vampire gangsters and shape-shifting thugs. After two hundred years as a succubus, she burns for freedom and longs to escape her brutal life as a trophy girl for hell's minions. Then she meets Rajah, an incubus who touches her heart and intoxicates her senses. Rajah shares the same bleak fate as she does, and yearns just as desperately for freedom. But the only way for Jade to break her bonds is to betray Rajah - and doom the only man she's ever loved to a lifetime of hell.
This book was hot, gritty and dark, and her voice is so unlike any I've read before. A great tale of passion and redemption.
And the other book from my To Be Read pile was PLEASURE UNBOUND by Larissa Ione (who I've only just discovered is half of the erotic paranormal author, Sydney Croft, another favourite of mine).
Blurb: Tayla Mancuso is a demon-slayer who hungers for sensual pleasure - but fears it will always be denied her. Until she lands in a hospital run by demons in disguise, and the head doctor, Eidolon, makes her body burn with unslakable desire. But to prove her ultimate loyalty to her peers, she must betray the surgeon who saved her life.
Eidolon cannot resist this fiery, dangerous woman who fills him with both rage and passion. Not only she his avowed enemy, but she could very well be the hunter who has been preying upon his people. Torn between his need for the truth and his quest to find his perfect mate before a horrific transformation claims him forever, Eidolon will dare the unthinkable - and let Tayla possess him, body and soul...
The world building is so realistic and the two characters just tug so hard at your heart as their story unfolds. As soon as I finished reading this book I promptly ordered the other 3 available ones in the series.
Did I interest anyone in either book? :-)
Kylie,
Loved Shadowfae! Must re-read again when I've finished my stack of unread books.
And Larissa's Demonica series is fab -- ditto, as per above!
So yep, those two would definitely have my vote, too, for sure!
(Have I used enough exclamation marks to convince people? Why, yes, methinks I might have, LOL)
I'm getting Angela Knight's new book Master of Fire in the Mageverse series. (working on getting all of thse.)
Then, I'll be buying The Vampire and the Virgin by Kerrelyn Sparks. I love Kerry's books. I have the whole series.
Reading Forced Mate by Rowena Cherry in between homework. I'm liking what I've read so far. I'll probably pick up her other titles.
I'm also reading Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer.
Geez, I'm a book 'ho.
Hugs,
Tambra
