Discovering New Authors

Yesterday I got a surprise in the mail! A hardcover, special 2-in-1 edition Secrets Volumes 11 & 12. Technically, it shouldn't have been a surprise because I ordered it, I'd just completely forgot about it. And I got a really good deal too. Found it on Amazon for something like 4 cents. There's a point to my story, I promise.

A few years ago I discovered erotic romance author Lisa Marie Rice and in my quest to find everything ever written by her, I stumbled across Red Sage's Secrets (Volume 9 to be exact). Thanks to my obsessive search, I discovered another now-favorite author, Kimberly Dean. She's the reason I was looking for Volume 11 and when I saw the two in one special, I couldn't pass it up. She's written short stories/novellas for Black Lace, Avon Red, Ellora's Cave, and Red Sage. She also has some releases with Pocket, but I haven't had a chance to pick them up yet :) Have you ever read an author and wondered why you'd never heard of them before? Maybe she's really popular and I'm just jumping on the bandwagon late, but after reading her I felt like 'Hey, I should have known about her before now!' She knows how to write men who are men and I love that.

Who are your favorite authors and how did you discover them?

I have to admit, I had no clue JD Robb was Nora Roberts (which is probably good, because at the time I didn't read romance--I didn't start reading it until someone told me the mystery I was writing was a romance), but I'd heard some interesting chatter on line about how different JD Robb was from Nora Roberts. This intrigued me, so I bought Naked in Death and was hooked.

Most of my favorite authors have come by word of mouth!

I tend to be one of "those" book buyers that look at a cover and think huh that looks good. Half of the authors I LOVE I found that way. (Thank God for good cover art) Once I find an author I LOVE I have to own everything by them.
Some of those are:
Ilona Andrews, Rachel Caine, Christina Dodd, and Jim Butcher

OH SK was the same way I saw her book and bought it. Then read the back cover and thought UM NO but decided to read it anyway and now I'm hooked on the Dark Hunters

Yes, Dark Hunters rule and I believe it's your fault (Sarai!) that I'm addicted to SK now ;) Not that I'm complaining!

I don't have a lot of time to browse in bookstores any more, so I rely on Authorlink to introduce me to new authors. I get a lot of novels every week to read and review and have discovered most of the new writers through that. Emily Giffin is good, very yuppy but interesting, and so is Hester Browne, a British author. Of course, my favorite, although I haven't had a chance to read the last two books, is Kim Harrison whose books introduced me to the wide world of paranormal fiction. I've also reviewed quite a few in the same vein, if you'll pardon my pun.
